THE CHARACTER
Entry of law in the legend, Elizabeth of Austria, known to all simply as Sissi, was one of the most beautiful women of his time and discussed. Born and raised in the mountains of Bavaria, far from the dusty ceremonial of the court of Monaco, he learned from his father to love the beautiful things in the world, the smell of freedom and the desire to rebel against the rules of nineteenth-century society. But fate had quite different plans for her Serbian: at sixteen married Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria. Like a butterfly drawn to the glittering lights of a room, Sissi remains trapped in the narrow links of the ceremony of the Viennese court. Too rebellious to submit, too proud to forget itself and too light to be locked in a golden palace, too stubborn to give up their own projects, he began to travel, play sports, to prefer the sea and the mountains to the gray streets of Vienna , to write poems, to detest the mediocrity of the members of the court and his family. In the company of her husband, beloved, but always in uniform and away, he prefers to that of the Hungarian nobles, his dogs, his horses, cousin of Ludwig, King of Bavaria manufacturer of fairy-tale castles, the most extravagant and members of his entourage. A sixty-duration flight, which ended tragically with a warm September afternoon on the shores of Lake Geneva, when the armed robbery of an anarchist puts an end to consecrate his life to the legend. With his life of excess, the treatment reserved for the manic physical activity long hair (you did install the royal palace in a real gym), from diets to long exhausting hours of walking and riding, love for poetry as for travel, Elizabeth remains unknown to be solved. After the extraordinary success of the films with Romy Schneider in the fifties the myth of Sissi is consecrated to global fame with a distorted stereotype, sweet, that has nothing to do with the real Elizabeth, who was actually a very lonely woman, authoritarian and sometimes even selfish, gentle with those who deserved her affection ruthless with those who were not worthy to join his circle. Yet the fiction dedicated to her collect resounding success, as well as musicals, conferences, biographies, documentaries and numerous exhibitions every year are dedicated worldwide.
EXHIBITION
Organized by the art field in collaboration with the Atelier Gluck Art, the exhibition displays various statements relating to the myth of Sissi producing a thematic that addresses the key points. The biographical part is responsible primarily for portraits and posters that tell his life from his birth in 1837 to the dramatic death at the hands of a murderess in 1898:
splendid reproductions of the most famous portraits of the empress, her husband Francis Joseph, son of Rudolph and beloved cousin Ludwig help the visitor to become familiar with the characters that had great importance for Sissi affective. The chronicle of events is left to the newspapers of the time, postcards, commemorative prints, including the reproduction of front page of Corriere della Sera on 12 September 1898 devoted entirely to news of the Empress. Observing more than one hundred books about his life, his poetry, the places she loved, you can understand what his personal human story has interested historians and biographers since the years immediately following his death (1898) to date. It starts from the first 1930 edition of the biography of Egon Conte Corti to reach the new editions of the diaries of his beloved daughter Maria Valeria, the unhappy daughter Stephanie of Belgium, its greek reader, his latest lady in waiting: all persons the close stood differently and give different portraits of Elizabeth. Some reproductions of his poems speak to us of his grudge against the mediocrity of those who stood around and hatred he felt for the falsity of the human being, but also the sweetness that was able to devote to those who loved her. The great attention which reserved to his own, admired, physical beauty is evidenced by two very accurate replicas of her clothes and treated by Tiziana Romanato Diego Comandone: the famous white dress worn by Sissi gala in the portrait of Winterhalter, that he consecrated the world-famous when he was still alive, and one of its very typical clothing blacks who never stopped wearing since 1889, when his son Rudolf committed suicide at Mayerling. Two very different Sissi but complementary acting within the resplendent court that seems to embody the melancholy of Austria Felix and the intimate, painful and resigned in recent years. The dresses are complemented by two reconstructions of famous hairstyles (edited by Lia Wigs-wood) with which Elizabeth loved to collect the long hair that reached to the calves: one with the famous imperial Stelloni diamond (reproductions made specifically provided by the SisiMuseum Vienna) and the more "collection" used for all the days and collected in a sophisticated mesh of pigtails.
space is obviously dedicated to the cinema. If still the myth of Sissi is well imprinted in the imagination of young and old young people should certainly be on the many films about the character, first of all the trilogy of Marishka Ernst (1955-57) with Romy Schneider film that still collect huge success when aired. This also shows in the more mature and honest that Sissi Romy returned to play in 1973, "Ludwig" directed by Luchino Visconti. Posters, stills and movie posters original witness this amazing journey remembering that even the beautiful Ava Gardner played the role in the blockbuster "Mayerling" by Terence Young in 1960.
The myth continues with the display of posters of exhibitions dedicated to Sissi over the years, with significant exposure gadgets specially sent by the SisiMuseum shop in Vienna and librettos for musicals and concerts, themed magazines, sticker albums (including a rare complete copy of the album released by Lightning in 1954 when the first film del'uscita with Romy Schneider), picture stories, picture books, puzzles, games, children's magazines and publications of all kinds.
Thanks to the collaboration of Dr. Dino Ramella, which provides some valuable evidence devoted to the first queen of Italy, the exhibition presents for the first time an unusual combination. Elizabeth of Austria will be confronted with Margaret of Savoy, the Empress of Austria and the first queen of Italy met on two separate occasions in 1881 in Austria during an official visit to Venice in 1895. Two queens as far away as ever to carry out their institutional role, two very different women for physical appearance and character that is the will of fate elbow to elbow "enemy" Sissi never forgave the Italians had driven the Austrians from Lombardy Veneto and especially of having "stolen" from the throne to his sister Maria Sophia, Queen of Naples. A tribute to all women, far from political tracts and from the battlefields, in the forthcoming celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.
short, a long journey that shows us how this beautiful woman, controversial, sad, know still have an incredible fascination for young and old: it is the magnificence of the court of Vienna as opposed to her or the singular pain of a beautiful woman in perpetual flight from itself, there is always something about her that fascinates the reader, the tourist, the director, the scholar, the historian. At this point we have tried to dedicate this event.
